Top CXC Performers, SAHS.86 & SAHS News

Good afternoon,
Four young ladies at St. Andrew High School for Girls (SAHS) gained perfect scores in nine (9) CXC subjects for the June 2011 examinations. Zahra Henry, Ashley-Jade Grennell, Narique McIntosh and Linet Reid accomplished this fantastic feat.
Zahra Henry and Ashley-Jade Grennell, St. Andrew High Sixth Formers
Today, we are presenting a conversation with two of the ladies, Zahra Henry and Ashley-Jade Grennell. We will feature Narique and Linet next week.

Ashley-Jade Grennell: Distinctions in Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Technical Drawing, Spanish, English A, English B, Mathematics and Information Technology. As a Sixth Former (Grade 12), this Arc house lady is currently pursuing CAPE Advanced level subjects - Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Communication Studies, Geometrical and Mechanical Engineering Drawing

A little known fun fact: Ashley-Jade was breast fed for 2 1/2 years...The United Nations advisory is right people...'breast is best' for success :-)

Grennell shared "All of my teachers have individually made a unique impact on me.  To 'pick' one would be quite a challenge. The person that has made the most significant impact is my beloved Principal, Mrs. Sharon Reid (although she did not teach me). She is someone that I hope to emulate, mainly because she has the distinct ability to steer students in the right direction.  Mrs. Reid has created a God-fearing institution that houses some of the craziest and happiest students who go on to become trailblazers and create trailblazers :-)" When asked about her dream job, Ashley-Jade said "Hmm, to be fully honest I just want to enjoy my job.  Currently, I believe that I would enjoy engineering. Not fully sure about which one, but I will be! :-)"

Zahra Henry: Distinctions in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Spanish, French, English A, English B and Mathematics. Zahra is a proud, purple-lady in the house of Gartshore and loves to act, dance and perform. With just one look at her CAPE 'A' level selection of French, Spanish, Communication Studies, Biology and Chemistry it is obvious she could pursue a career in either Natural Sciences, the Arts or a unique hybrid. "At the moment I am undecided about a 'dream job' but one of my wildest dreams is to perform on Broadway." We have spoken a Broadway performance into being for Zahra, with an even longer run than Phantom of the Opera (which Henry saw 'live' in New York City).

Little known fun fact: Zahra loves to 'goof-off' and make people smile.

Mr. Rhooms (Drama) and Mrs. Dixon (Grades 3&4) at Mona Preparatory were cited as primary school educators who have positively impacted Zahra's life. At the high school level, all teachers at St. Andrew High have made an indelible impression with special 'shout-outs' to Mrs. Morgan (2nd Form - English A & B), Mr. Wickham (2nd Form Mathematics), Miss Bhoorasingh (4th Form - Spanish & English A teacher) and Miss Robinson (3rd - 5th Form - Mathematics). Her tip for success: BALANCE is key...It's very important to do activities other than 'hitting' the books.

Jazzy, happy hands - Ashley-Jade and Zahra at St. Andrew High School.

It was refreshing to talk with these ladies. Our team at the Emrie James Museum found them to be cool, 'grounded' and definitely not typical 'brainiacs'. The biggest surprise was their shared love for oldies music...not music of the 80's and the 90's but 'O-l-d-i-e-s' including Cherry Oh, Baby by award-winning Jamaican, Eric Donaldson. We wish Ashley-Jade and Zahra continued success. Sky is the limit!

NEXT Sunday: Join us for a conversation with Narique McIntosh and Linet Reid, Top CXC Performers - Pt.2

1925 Happenings
Click to view a time line for 1925
Milestones per TIME Magazine can be viewed here.

St. Louis, Mississippi was known as the entertainment and tourist city around the 1920s. Beautiful music from the Arcadia Peacock Orchestra of St. Louis would likely have been heard.
From the Radio Museum, it was noted where "radios were significantly more expensive in the original purchase as well as in the daily operation for which reason crystal receivers enjoyed great popularity in the early '20s. For the same reason, namely cost, many a radio was assembled in do-it-yourself fashion." Before long the St. Louis beat made its way to Jamaica.

Interestingly, research revealed that the original Broadway play, The Vagabond King*, opened at the Casino Theatre on September 21, 1925 the very day Jamaica High School for Girls (now St. Andrew High School) opened her gates! To give another perspective on the sights and sounds from that period, have a go with the video clip below: -
*It starred Dennis King as Villon and Carolyn Thomson as Katherine and ran for a successful 511 performances at the Casino Theatre (the first theatre in New York City to be lit entirely by electricity).

SAHS Alumna Feature
Source: dianebrowneblog.blogspot.com
SAHS alumna and former SAHS teacher, Diane Browne (nee Aiken), recently won the Commonwealth Foundation's special prize in the 2011Commonwealth Short Story competition for her submission, The Happiness Dress (a short story for children).  Browne is the author of children's literature as well as a writer and editor of textbooks and the proud mother of Mandi and Rachel, who are both SAHS graduates.

As a proud Cavellite, Diane happily cheered "Cavell for ever!!!!" in our recent Inter-House Facebook competition and leaves little room to wonder about the colour featured on the cover of her latest novel, Island Princess in Brooklyn. It is perfect for little girls aged 10-13 (daughters, nieces &/ god-daughters). Be sure to get a copy. We are exceedingly proud of Diane!

NEXT SUNDAY's FEATURE: Ashley-Jade Grennell, Zara Henry, Narique McIntosh & Linet Reid, the four (4) SAHS ladies who recently gained distinctions in nine (9) CXC/CSEC subjects. Don't miss out!
